June started well, but headed south in the middle, I had a solid run in the last few days to get almost back to break-even.

PokerStars were running a large WSOP Main Event satellite so I attempted a number of times to qualify through their $1 rebuy satellites. The play was unbelievably bad and I couldn't get hands to hold so that's the reason my MTT numbers above are so poor.

I'm glad my bread and butter game the 45 shows a decent return as I played a lot more $6.50 45 mans and did ok in them.

So to analyse the numbers above, yes, technically it was a losing month but I don't believe I rebought in the satellites as many times as most people would've. The telling numbers tho are not enough 1st place finishes and not enough late finishes (top 10%) ... that's where the money and the profit comes from and I just wasn't there often enough.

I really haven't been playing much of late as I've been working on a few other things so wouldn't be concentrating like I should. I played last night and upon checking OPR that was the first time I had played online in 9 days! I had a slightly winning session last night and have done ok again this morning. I'm still in one MTT and will head to the gym once its over. Bankroll currently sits at $1316.

Super Saturday

Having mentioned that Monday night is one of the worst times for me to play, it seems that Saturday morning is definitely the best. I essentially played a few MTT's and the normal $3.25 45 mans.

I have been doing well in MTT's lately but didn't have any luck today, only managing to mincash the last one I played in. The 45 mans were a different story tho ... cashing 6 of 8. Not only that, I won 2, had a second and 2 thirds.

The domination of 45's today has sent the bankroll back up to $1320, just $30 short of my all-time best. Being a long weekend with a public holiday on Monday, I'm guessing I'll be putting in some more time on PokerStars tomorrow. Monday I think I'm hanging with friends watching the World Cup, NBA and AFL.

After the good ...

... comes the bad.

After a good week previously, this one has been rough. Sunday night I finished with a stretch of 12 non-cashes, which led in to Monday which was just horrific. 22 games with 3 basically min-cashes. Then Friday night which was even worse ... 25 games, 2 min-cashes.

I didn't think I was playing badly, but was seeing some horrific bad beats and I don't think I've been rivered so many times in my life. I also cannot outrun queen jack off when I'm all-in, no matter what I have.

Yesterday was much better, especially in the morning. I had my first win in ... I'm embarrassed to say, 3 weeks. A couple of seconds and a number of other placings.

So after a good climb in May, the month finished with a downswing and the bankroll took a hit down from $1350. It got down to about $1175 on Friday but now sits at $1230.

Good week

Its been a good poker week for me. Beginning on Tuesday with a final table at the Shafston playing APL. I had finished just off the table for the last couple of weeks so it was nicely to finally make it on and I had a decent stack. Nothing went my on the final table tho, getting good hands but none of them holding up and I ended up getting knocked out in 5th.

I had a home game with my friends from school last night. $20 buy-in, rebuys allowed and there were 7 starters. The action was wild and woolly early and I of course was getting paid out on for folding so much and it took me ages to win my first hand. The rebuys were frequent early and with top 2 getting paid I was just waiting for a hand to push with. That ended up being queens which got outrun against jacks and ace queen off, of course an ace came. So I rebought and started to get a few cards, won hands and eventually got to heads-up with a large chip-lead. I pushed with ace 2, got called by queen 8 and a queen on the river put the stacks even. A few hands later and I raised all-in with ace queen, got called by 6's and the board ran out 2, 3, 4, 5 and it was over. The second place made me $60 profit after the buy-in (and rebuy) but it was disappointing next to get the win and finish second yet again.

This morning I played on PokerStars and ran red hot. I played six 45 mans, cashing 4 (and bubbling another) and of those 4 I had 2 seconds a third and a fourth. I also played 2 big MTT's cashing 1 of them. Thanks to the success in the 45 mans, the bankroll broke through $1300 for the first time reaching $1340.

Creepin' up

Slowly but surely the bankroll is climbing back to its peak (see graph below).

I'm essentially just playing the $3.25 45 man games so the going is slow. My sessions have been profitable for the last week but I haven't put in too much volume so there's nothing really exciting to mention, just steady, solid results.

Horrid start, strong finish

I'm heading to bed shortly but I thought I'd post quickly.

Things actually started really well. I had good stacks on a number of tables close to the final table ... then it all went wrong. I had some awful beats and things just didn't go my way. On the bubble, small blind shoves with 2 5 off and I snap call with kings in the big blind. He of course rivers a straight leaving me now short-stacked and I was out soon after. I finished 5th on another final table and then went on an absolute drought of not cashing (13 straight games).

Near the end of my session I started to have some luck and had some hands hold up finally. I finished the night with two good stacks on final tables. I lost two flips in a row on one and went out in 5th but thankfully got the other won. I was getting run over a bit heads-up but took a stand with king 8 off and thankfully flopped an 8 to beat his king jack and soon after got the win.

The win takes my firsts to 5 already which is a solid start less than half way through the month. I also unlocked the next VIP Stellar Reward so my bankroll is now up to $1160. Yes, my solid finish basically broke me even for the night.

Here's a song I like that's getting a fair bit of airplay on Triple J at the moment. I don't usually like remixes but I'm a fan of the original by MGMT which was also used as the opening song to the movie 21.

Run good

I was right ... thankfully the good results were just around the corner. The last month or so of poker had felt like a struggle, losing days, treading water, etc ... so it was nice to have a night where things went my way.

The night started slowly cashing just 1 of my first 8 attempts for a 5th but then I broke through for a win followed by a 4th for some momentum. I also had a 3rd and finished the night with another win. So two wins out of 17 games, along with a 3rd a 4th and a 5th is a pretty solid night.

The final win of the night was satisfying because it was against a good player and despite starting off with the chip lead, I soon gave it up when I mistakenly shoved over the top of a raise with 2's in the big blind. He snap-called and turned over queens ... and I soon found myself on the wrong end of a 5:1 chip lead. I started shoving and after catching some flops found myself right back in it. The turning point came when I pushed with king queen off and he called with queen 9 suited. Thankfully my hand held and the game was essentially over.

A good night on the tables and my bankroll is now just under $1150. I think my high is around $1250 so that is the next milestone and I'm also about to unlock another $10 VIP Stellar Reward so that will help.

PokerStars update

I'm in a bit of a funk at the moment, nothing seems to be going my way which I mentioned in a previous post. Nothing happened with the dating situation, work hasn't been that busy lately and I haven't really been making any progress on PokerStars. I've been getting to the gym regularly which is the one positive but probably not eating as well/healthy as I would like or should be.

So for the last week, I've just been focussing on the $3.25 45 man games. I believe I'm playing well and making the right moves, they just don't seem to be paying off at the moment. My bankroll has been floating up and down around the $1000 mark.

I put in some longer sessions on Saturday and Sunday and things to be on the improve ... a little. Saturday was break-even'ish as I couldn't do any better than a 4th place finish. Sunday I played a few MTT's as well as the 45's and got deep in a couple, cashing 3 out of 4. My best finishes were a 39th out of 2132 and 53rd out of 2460 ... good to get deep but nothing spectacular as far as payouts go. I had my best chance in the first one, I got knocked out when I raised with 9's from early position and the big blind shoved over the top. It wasn't worth folding as I needed to double-up, he turned over ace queen and hit an ace on the flop and I didn't improve. If I win that hand I would have had a more playable stack and could make a run at the top 20 and the final table.

The 45's went a little better yesterday too, despite bubbling at least 4 times. I got one win, a third and a fourth. The win came against a competent player who stacked off with middle pair, mid kicker on a low board when I limped kings from the small blind. I was surprised he couldn't fold when I showed strength on the flop by re-raising and it essentially cost him the game.

The bankroll is currently at $1063 which is a little higher than it has been for the last 2 weeks. Hopefully I can get back over $1100 soon and keep heading upwards from there.

As work hasn't been that busy I've also been railing some of my favourite online players in PokerStars SCOOP. My boys Assassinato and Bond18 have been doing ok without breaking through for a major result but the comeback-kid Shaun Deeb took down a PLO event last night for $63K.

As you can see, pretty ugly numbers and my first losing month in 2010. Most of the % numbers are ok, obviously not enough in the final 10% tho. Also, nowhere near enough top 3 finishes or victories.

I really stank up the $6.50 45 man games so for now have dropped back down to the $3.25's to get my confidence back and making sure I'm playing the best I can.

Hopefully I can put in more volume in May and post some much better numbers. Played a fair few games today and did ok, bankroll currently at $1030.

Sunday (Monday my time) results

This weekend really didn't go at all to plan.

* Friday night date ... nothing "happened"
* Sunday the big AFL game and my team got thumped
* I only managed to qualify for one of the big tournaments I wanted to play Monday morning
* Did ok in the early morning tournaments and then stunk up the $6.50 45 mans in the afternoon

I tried my best to satellite my way in to the Sunday Million and the Turbo Takedown but just couldn't get it done. I was so close on a number of occasions, for the TT my closest was 6th out of over 200 players when only 3 qualified.

The good news was that I cashed the Sunday Quarter Million for the first time. Not that its a huge achievement but it was nice to get paid after missing out the previous 2 or 3 times I've played. There was 33,000 starters and I finished around 3000. I busted out when I pushed all-in (5x blinds) with king queen off from the hijack and got called by ace-jack and my hand didn't improve. I'm fine with the play as I was getting close to desperation and needed to double-up.

I've been playing a few of the $4.40 180 man tournaments when I have time. As they're not turbos they take over 4 hours so I don't always have the time to play them. I've currently got an ROI of around 25% in them (over a small sample) which is ok as I haven't got a big score from them yet. Unlike the $6.50 45 mans where I managed to min-cash just 1 out of 15 attempts yesterday and my ROI is now negative in these which is extremely frustrating and hurting my bankroll.

So I started yesterday getting deep and cashing most of the games I played and finished the afternoon cashing none and decided to call it a night and watch Transformers 2 instead. I'll have a couple of days off now and hopefully come back revitalised later in the week. Bankroll is down to $1022 and not surprisingly the sharkscope graph took a pretty big dive yesterday.

Weekend goals

Since the break due to the Adelaide trip, I've been back at the tables a little bit more over the last week. I'm still not playing that much, but I'm putting in time. I'm still not doing anything exciting in the $6.50 45 mans (I haven't won one of them this month) but took down another $3.25 (out of 2 played) in a short session last night.

With a long weekend ahead, I finally get the chance to play in the big Sunday (US time) tournaments. As these are Monday morning Australia time, I'm normally working but thanks to the public holiday on Monday for once I'm not. This weekend is the monthly Turbo Takedown, there's the Sunday 1/4 Million and I'm going to try to get in to the Sunday Million for the first time. Playing the latter on my bankroll would be crazy so I'm of course going to try and satellite my way in. I don't have that many FPP's at the moment but the aim is to use them to get in to the Takedown and then play small satellite's to get in to the other two.

I started playing the satellites last night with no luck. I got deep in a couple but couldn't finish the job. The 1/4 Million should be straight forward as the $2 satellites are extremely soft and I have plenty of experience playing them. If I'm going to get up at 5 or 6am on Monday morning tho, I'd like to get in to one of the other big ones as well.

Fingers crossed

Radelaide

Yes, its been a while since I've posted. I actually haven't been playing much because I was down in Adelaide (nicknamed Radelaide) for a week helping to run a basketball tournament.

On the Sunday of the grand final I actually got a chance to get online at PokerStars as all the work for the tournament had basically been done. On the Monday I was out at the airport about 6 hours before my flight so played for about 4 hours or so. Since it wasn't the ideal place to grind, I just played the $1.75 18 mans. Of my first 4 games I won 2 ... but after that I failed to get a win and could only manage a few places from there.

After another date on Tuesday night and then trivia last night, I had the chance to play a little tonight. I was feeling tired so it was just a short session but I was back playing my favourite 45 mans, warming up with the $3.25's and then moving on to the $6.50's. This month it feels like I just can't get anything going in the $6.50's after doing well in them up until now. Thankfully the $3.25's are going well to make up for it.

I want to get up early and get to the gym tomorrow so I just played 7 or 8 games. 4 x $3.25's with a win and a 6th and the rest $6.50's with no cashes.

I might get the chance to play a bit more this weekend so hopefully I can get some better results in the $6.50's. Bankroll just over $1160.

Picture me rolling ...

Including the win in my last game on Thursday night, I've now won 3 of my last 5 games. They were only $3.25 45 mans because I was playing short sessions, but still ... good all the same.

So yes, I just finished a very short, quick session but obviously the results of it were great. Four games played, two wins. The first win was a bit out of nowhere as I really didn't expect it. I failed to double before the final table so went on to it as one of the short-stacks. It was taking ages to lose anyone and I decided to defend my big blind and try to double up against a slightly shorter stack all-in with 8 9 suited. They turned over ace ten off and first card out was the ace, second was an 8 but my hand didn't improve. So I was all-in on my small blind but thanks to someone trying to bluff on the flop, I won and got some chips back. A whole nother orbit went by without losing anyone and someone shoved from mid-position and I was forced to call in the big blind with king jack suited which I obviously didn't mind. He turned over ace rag and I caught a king on the flop and made the flush on the river.

Finally we lost a couple of players and the money bubble burst. I stole the blinds with queen ten off from midposition which moved me in to 3rd place. Not long after that I found myself short-stack until I doubled up with ace king 5 handed. Lost a few more players and I was short-stack 3 handed until I double up twice, the second with 9's against queen ten off. I lost a huge flip with ace queen suited vs pocket 4's (I of course had ace queen) and looked to be gone. Somehow I fought my way back in to it and watched the other two attack each other and I soon found myself heads up but facing a 4:1 chip deficit.

First hand, aces in the big blind ... but the big stack small blind folds ... sick. Funnily enough, it didn't matter as I had them again 3 hands later (after stealing the blinds once) and doubled-up to take the chip lead. Then 3 hands later I had aces AGAIN and delivered the knock-out blow to get the win.

The second win was a lot more straight-forward. I was short-stacked midway through but doubled up with 7's vs ace king and then raised under-the-gun with jacks, got shoved on and decided to call. He turned over aces and luckily for me a jack came on the turn and I was chip-leader. From there I cruised through to the final table, kept the lead in the early going and then got a big stack and sailed in to heads-up with a bit of a chip lead. My opponent seemed fairly aggressive early so I decided to call a small blind shove with king 8 off, he turned over jack ten and thankfully my hand held. That was the turning point and I knocked him out soon after.

So my bankroll is now at US$1212 which is of course an all-time high. My goal yesterday was to get in to the top 2% on OPR, I'm pretty sure that will happen tonight.

Still running good

Haven't been putting in much volume of late but the bankroll is still steadily growing and I think playing less tables at a time is really helping my game. I'm basically playing no more than 3 tables at a time and its been paying off with good results of late.

Tonight was the first time I played since a short session on Monday night. Tuesday I hate a date with a girl I used to play poker with at the Shafston. It went well so we'll see what happens from here. Wednesday is trivia night and we came second again after losing in sudden death last week.

The night didn't start well tonight with a couple of ugly suck-outs in the first couple of $3.25 warm-up games. In my third $6.50 game I had a 3rd place finish which was good but could have been so much better. Three-handed the game was just going around in circles until I defended my big blind with ace 6 off to a small blind shove. Unfortunately he turned over ace 9 suited and caught a 9 on the flop to cripple me. I fought back a little but was knocked out when my aces in the small blind couldn't beat king 8 suited in the big blind.

After grabbing dinner I got a second place in another $6.50 game. I had a good shot at the win against a relatively new player but just went card-dead come heads-up and just got pounded on. I eventually got it in good on the flop but was called and he caught a gut-shot straight on the river for the win.

Thankfully I finished the night with a win in a $3.25 45 man. It was nice to take one down after getting close a couple of times earlier in the night. Three handed again was taking its time but I raised with ace king off on the button, small blind shoved turning over ace 8 and thankfully my hand help up to give me a decent chip lead going in to heads-up. First hand the small blind shoves all-in and I call with ace queen in the big blind. Thankfully my hand holds and its all over straight away.

With 3 strong results tonight and clearing the 2nd Stellar reward on Monday, the bankroll is now just under $1150. I probably won't be playing again until Sunday afternoon, friends place tomorrow night for the AFL, heading to the parents on Saturday and then caddying on Sunday morning.

March madness

I haven't been playing a lot of late, plenty of other things going on. With the NCAA basketball tournament (March Madness) underway, when I do actually play, I tend to have the laptop on in front of the TV watching the action.

Since I'm not giving the games my total focus, I've been just playing a couple of tables at a time and tending to play the lower stake $3.25 45 games. They've been going well and I finally officially got over the 4 figure mark with my bankroll. Thanks to a win yesterday and a number of final tables, the bankroll now sits just over US$1050.

I'm about to unlock another VIP Stellar Reward so that'll be another $10 bonus earned. After that its another 3 x $10 bonuses before they start paying $50 each time. Those are a few months off tho with the amount and the level I'm currently playing at.

Gym has been going well still. I did 12 sessions in 12 days finishing with a return to boxing class on Saturday morning. I used to go every Saturday but got out of the routine last year when my finances took a hit during the economic slowdown. I've just been easing back in to things at the gym but boxing is a really good cardio and full-body workout and I'm already feeling it today in my calves.

Anyway, early night so I can be up early for the gym before work. Here's my current SharkScope graph:

Short session

I didn't really plan on playing tonight but I played for 2 hours or so. I've got the laptop in front of the TV, so since I wouldn't be as switched on as usual I just played the $3.25 45 man games and didn't play anymore than 3 at a time.

My best result was actually my first game where I finished 2nd. I was unlucky to do so as I played extremely well and got unlucky down the stretch. Before the final table with about 20 players left I took a flip I normally wouldn't when I raised pre and got shoved on by the big blind. Normally I'd fold there but I called and to my surprise he turned over queen ten suited. Thankfully there was a 7 on the flop because the turn was a queen and I knocked him out. Then on the bubble I raised on the button with kings and was delighted when a similar stack shoved over the top of me from the small blind. I was even happier when he turned over king queen off and I had a solid chip lead.

On the final table I re-raised all-in over a cutoff raise with ace king in the big blind and thankfully he turned over ace 9 off and my hand held. It was from here that things went downhill. I raised from the small blind putting a short-stack all-in, he calls with 10, 2 off ... I flop a king, turn a queen, he rivers a four card flush with the 2. Same player pushes all-in under-the-gun, I call in the big blind with ace 6 to try and knock him out. He turns over 8's, I flop 2 pair and he again rivers a four card flush.

Thankfully the big blind took out the short-stack so I get to heads-up but am facing a sizable chip deficit. Surprisingly he folds the first hand in the big blind when I shove and next hand I get pocket jacks in the big blind. He puts me all-in and I of course call, he turns over king 7 off and of course catches a king on the flop and the tournament is over.

After the first tournament I got knocked out in the first 5 players in 3 of the next 4 tournaments which is of course very unlike me. First i ran queens in to kings and then jacks in to aces, both of my hands I had in the big blind. The 3rd one I called a minraise, flopped top pair, turned two pair and then despite me showing strength on both the flop and turn he kept calling and rivered a better two pair.

I cashed the final tournament I played in coming in 6th. I was lucky to get to the money as I never had a stack and was very short going to the final table. Thankfully there was a suck-out early and 2 players got knocked out.

As I only played 7 tournaments, the 2nd and the 6th were enough to give me a profitable session and the bankroll is just under four figures at $997. I'm playing APL tomorrow night and trivia on Wednesday so won't be on PokerStars for the next few days.

Update

I didn't do much blogging over the last week or two because work had been so flat out and I had been focussing on getting back in the gym.

Anyway, on to some of the things I haven't yet talked about. One night last week I tried to focus on the 180 man games. Probably my weakest game of all that I've played so far is the $2.20 180 game with about a -15% ROI (according to SharkScope). Usually I mix these in when I'm playing 45 man games so my thought was that if I just played these I might do better rather than playing different game speeds all at once. It didn't go well and I played 14 of these games and cashed none of them. Sure, its a very small sample and the variance in these are so high that I'm sure this is standard, but it was frustrating all the same.

In other news, the APL Poker Classic was held in Melbourne last weekend and a number of my friends were playing in it. One of my friends David posted on Facebook that he had made it in to the money which started at the top 100 (600 starters). I didn't see any further updates and figured he had just min-cashed until just before I went to bed he posted that he finished 4th winning $35K and a spot on Team APL for the World Series of Poker (valued at $15K). So today a few of us had a BBQ in New Farm park to celebrate his win and hear some of the stories. He basically put his success down to a good run of cards at the right time and not getting any bad beats.

After my failure in the 180's the previous week I decided to just focus on the 45 man games. At the moment I'm concentrating on the $6.50 buy-ins but using the $3.25's as a warm-up to get my head in the game. I hadn't been running that well during the week and my bankroll was down under $850 a few times. The last 2 days have been better tho as I won a $6.50 game and today a $3.25 one. The latter was satisfying as I came back from a very short-stack after I walked in to someone slow-playing aces and I had pocket tens. From there I clawed my way back and actually started heads-up ahead and won when my ace 8 held up after the big blind re-raised all-in with king queen off. I finished tonight cashing 3 out of the 4 tournaments I played before dinner and the 4th one I bubbled. It wasn't anything too exciting tho as I had two 6th places and a 3rd.

The bankroll is now back up to US$980 so hopefully tomorrow night I can push through the $1000 mark again and head onwards and upwards.

1000 reasons to smile!

I told you in my last post that I could taste four figures and yesterday it happened! My PokerStars account is sitting at exactly $1000 which I think is a great achievement having started with only a $12 deposit just over a year ago (Feb 02, 2009).

I've been very disciplined (some would say "nittish") with my bankroll management and have built it up steadily. I started with the micro'est of cash games until I got up to $100 and then I switched to my more preferred tournaments and SNG's when I was properly rolled to play them.

I learnt a lot of lessons along the way and had to endure a downswing/losing streak of around 1100 games where my roll fell from over $600 to under $300 at one point. Since then tho I've been on a heater over the last couple of months to climb to four figures with the last two months being my best to date. Here's my graph showing the upswing ... pretty!

So yesterday, after grinding the 18's on Friday night to get the $40 bonus and basically breaking-even by the time I got it, I was back to my usual 45 man's. Since it was Saturday I also had the chance to play some large field MTT's. The day started slowly missing out in my first few 45's and also failing to cash in a $4 MTT. From there tho I caught fire cashing 8 of the last 12 tournaments I played.

I mincashed a $1 MTT but got deep in a $2 one finishing 38th out of 3650 players. I had some luck with about 60 players remaining when I called a shove with ace king off and it was also called by another player behind me. The original player turned over ace king which I expected but the player behind me turned over jacks. The flop wasn't good as it was a low board but it ended up putting quads on the board splitting with the two aces and I had survived. I doubled up once or twice and then got aces in early position. I raised a standard 3 times blinds and had the big blind shove all-in over the top and I of course insta-called. Big blind turned over pocket 8's and the double up would send me in to the top 15 or 20 chip-counts but unfortunately an 8 came on the turn and I was done. So frustrating to get that deep and then lose with aces when the decent money doesn't kick in until the last 15 or so and of course there was some good money up for grabs on the final table.

While playing that I cashed a few 45 mans finishing with a win in a $3.25 game. I came from behind in the heads-up battle to get the win which is always satisfying to do. At one point I was facing a 2.5:1 chip deficit but got a few cards, turned up the pressure and got it back close to even. The turning point was when I completed the small blind with queen rag and called a massive shove on a queen jack 4 flop. He turned over jack rag and my queen rag held up to take down a huge pot and the game was over shortly after that.

Last night I caught up with some friends who I haven't seen for a while to play a cash game. A couple of the guys are friends who played APL with me so I knew they would have improved a little since we used to play last year. A number of others were new to the game and I knew there would be very little folding and plenty of rubbish being played. Its a $50 buy-in game with the option of having a one re-buy if you get knocked out. Third got $50, second $150 and the winner took the rest which turned out to be $300.

I lost a big hand early when I rivered a straight but called a solid bet from someone who had rivered a flush. I didn't see many hands for a while until I got kings and raised solidly vs one limper and got called by another player and the original limper. The board came out low all hearts and I had the king of hearts. The original limper led out strongly and after a little while I called as did the player behind me who I knew had a strong hand. The turn was a blank and was checked around and the limper led out solidly on the river which was another blank. I wasn't sure what the limper had whether it was a flush or a set but I disappointingly folded my kings and the player behind me called with jacks. The limper turned over two pair ... 2 ... 8 ... suited (clubs) and took down the pot. Yes, he called a solid raise and a call with 2 8 suited ... that's the sort of game I was playing in, raises not respected and very little folding.

Thankfully I got a good chip-up when I raised with tens got two callers and the board came out ten high. I checked when first to act and the last player shoved all-in on a bluff and I of course called and took it down. That same player re-bought and went on to build a stack and I eventually went on to face him heads-up. He had a huge chip-lead but I got a good double-up early. From there I ran in to a few of his hands, took a couple of coolers, got no cards and was eventually knocked out. I got the $150 second-place prize so made $100 and had a good night of cards, beers and pizza with mates.

Bonus unlocked

I've spent the last 4 or so hours grinding the $3.40 18 mans in order to get to 2500 FPP's and unlock the $40 40 billionth hand bonus. What sucks is I ran like shit so by the time I got the FPP's I was basically breaking even for the night. Yipppeeee ... groan.

I won one of the games early and then went on a baron stretch where I basically couldn't even cash. Maybe I was playing too many tables, maybe I was just running bad.

The last three games kind of summed up the night for me. One table I had a massive chip lead with four players remaining and had at least a 2:1 chip lead when heads-up rolled around. I dominated the battle early until I raised with pocket 8's and got re-raised all-in by queen ten suited and of course he flops a queen and wins the race. A couple of hands later he limps the small blind, I push with 6's in the big blind and he calls with 2's. Flop of course has a 2 and I finish second in a game I thought I was sure to win. On the other tables I re-raise all-in with queens, original raiser turns over jacks and spikes one on the turn and on the final table I raise 1/2 my stack in the small blind with ace king when folded to. The big blind who is a terrible, loose player calls, I shove on a low flop because I was never folding and he turns over 5 9 off and has hit the 9 ... greaaaat.

In other PokerStars news, its only a matter of hours before the magic 40 billionth hand is dealt. I won't be sticking around for the festivities as its past midnight and I'm off to bed.

Bankroll $920, FPP count 8.

The up and up

I really didn't plan on playing last night as work has been so busy and I had so much to do. I got caught up on a number of things so decided to log on to PokerStars.

Things started very slowly for me as I failed to cash my few games. I started playing $3.25 45 mans as well as some 18 mans to chase after the 25oo FPP's I need for the $50 40 billionth hand bonus. I failed to cash the first 5 or 6 and loaded up a couple of $6.50 45 mans.

I got a 3rd in an 18 man but the turning point came when I won my first $6.50 45 man for $84. Its not that much but to put it in perspective its 10% of my bankroll so its handy. I remember I tripled up very early when I flopped top set in a 3 way pot and we got it all in on the flop and the board paired on the river to give me the full house vs an overpair and an underpair. I remember the heads up was a solid battle against a decent player but I began to pull away and was happy to get the win.

Tonight I've mostly been playing the 18's to get the FPP count up. I'm now just 75 off my target so hopefully I can knock over the goal by Saturday or Sunday, just in time to get the bonus which ends on Monday night my time.

I have played a couple of $6.50 45 mans with my best/only cash being a 3rd place. The 18 mans have been going ok, I tend to break even or be slightly profitable in them and that has continued tonight. I'm down to my last game and sitting 4th of 7 after shoving 3 hands straight and then turning quads in a multiway unraised pot.

So after winning the $6.50 45 man and a few of the 18 mans, my bankroll is now $916 (I just came 4th in the last 18 man) and I can almost taste 4 figures.
